It's October! A bunch of you are changing your Twitter display name to something spooky & clever -- maybe using emoji or special fonts. However, know that this makes it pretty hard for people using screenreaders or text-to-speech. #a11y #accessibilityhttps://twitter.com/vavroom/status/1013763559984173056 …

Are you using emojis in your Twitter display name? Do you think it's cute? Maybe. But check out what it's like for a screen reader user in this short video (open captions thanks to VoiceOver!) Avoid emojis in your twitter display name if you can. #a11y #accessibility pic.twitter.com/Vl6tT3kNZ7

Is it a problem if the emoji is at the end, or only if it's in between words? I don't want to cause problems, but also there isn't really a concept of flair on Twitter, so there's no other way for me to include the rainbow as part of my name :-\

It definitely adds time no matter where it is. If you're hard sold on emoji (and I can get why), I think keeping it a) limited, and b) at the end is a good compromise. Don't put it at the beginning, because then the listener has to sit through the emoji to get to the name.

It's a good question though, thanks for asking! You should try it out for yourself if you want the actual experience. (TTS or select to speak is really easy to enable and test.)

I wouldn't say I'm hard sold on emoji, just that I've found its useful to have it appear by my name in the timeline, not just in my bio. I'm open to alternatives - what I'd really just love is a flair feature within Twitter itself.

Having it in a separate element would be nice, but it would also be another element for a screenreader to read.

Interesting - does that mean blue checks for verified users are problematic as well?

The blue check is not a part of the display name and not a Unicode char so i would wager not

The checkmark doesn't get spoken with Android TTS or MacOS VoiceOver.
