What the Women’s March accomplished: getting people excited about civic engagement What it did not accomplish: anything material

If the women’s march had done anything we wouldn’t have had to get to the point where four women are sacrificing their entire lives to stop a dude named Brett from fucking up civil rights for the next 40 years.

I need you all to understand this. If Kavanaugh’s confirmation is in jeopardy, and I’m not sure it is, it is so only because of the sacrifice of FOUR people.

The activism and stuff has been important and necessary but these are the same people stripping Healthcare and building baby jails and none of the activism has stopped that, and it won’t stop Kavanaugh’s confirmation.

People have to throw their entire goddamn bodies into the machinery to stop it. You can’t just gather around the machine and say “I don’t like you, machine!” all while maintaining it’s parts.

I feel like before the 2008 collapse this would've led to a general strike. People are so financially unstable now, most feel they couldn't do it unless their lives were imminently at risk :(

That's not to say anything other than the US economy has been turned into a tool to undermine Democracy

I dunno; the die-ins and chasing Reps around their home districts saved the AHA a time or two. The problem is doing that shit takes more time off than most people can manage. If more people could share the load, that would help. Or IF PEOPLE HAD FUCKING VOTED HILLARY IN 2016.

People who talk about saving the ACA and are still wishing more people voted for Clinton are precisely the kind of people who are excited about civic engagement and have not accomplished anything material. You miss the old status quo because it was fine for you.

I'm a straight white guy. I want things to improve for those around me. The only part of the status quo I miss is that thing where the President wasn't chosen by the Kremlin.

The ACA literally was the status quo. Clinton literally campaigned on being more of the status quo.

That very much depends on your time frame. From my perspective, the status quo looks like 60 years of GOP assaults on the weak in defense of the strong. I'm not much in favor of that, thankyouverymuch.
