This was the origin of the usage.
I feel old now. "Gather, children, around the campfire, for I will tell the story of the origin. It was shortly after dinosaurs roamed the earth, and steam engines transported humankind"
I mean I’ve used computers since the late 80s I just have a bad memory lol
It really really was. And we only (IIRC) called it desktop PC once towers started popping up. It was just a PC before that.
Yeah, it was a retronym, like "silent film", or "wired internet". I feel like it only really arose as a term in the early 90s?
It took of in the mid-80s: https://books.google.com/ngrams/graph?content=desktop+pc&case_insensitive=on&year_start=1800&year_end=2008&corpus=15&smoothing=7&share=&direct_url=t4%3B%2Cdesktop%20pc%3B%2Cc0%3B%2Cs0%3B%3Bdesktop%20PC%3B%2Cc0%3B%3BDesktop%20PC%3B%2Cc0 … We live in a sad world, with no mystery and wonder left :)
