I say that as a nonbinary trans person with a nonbinary trans partner. The high profile denials that went public a few weeks back were also for binary trans people.
Mainly, these requirements are more complex than they were before. And they put more grey areas there. Not every physician will understand them (as not every physician understood the previous).
There is a bit of “there are only two genders” bullshit in this new language but note that bigots use that line against binary trans people allllllll the time
I mean, there’s very specific language in there specifically talking about how you can get these changes done with “appropriate medical treatment” changing your ASAB from one binary sex category to another. That...is a pretty explicit attack on nb identity.
Yes but nonbinary people were never ever supported by the system so the change has limited material impact.
The old way for nonbinary people was, “you can’t do this.” The new way is, “you still can’t do this but now it’s harder for other people who aren’t you to do this.”
Except states are now increasingly allowing nb folk to do this. I fail to see how this language can’t arguably have been made to combat that.
I do think it was a factor. I don’t think it was a surgical strike on nonbinary people and vs a carpet bomb on all trans people.
The immediate impact of this policy change is going to be largely binary trans folks with applications in flight or who need to renew existing passports and things like that. Nonbinary people are also going to be hurt but the immediate impact is gonna be binary trans folks.
I'm engaged to a nonbinary person, so I immediately noticed the implications on nonbinary folks, but to be quite frank I don't think the Highly Advanced Republican Supermen of the Trump administration even know what a nonbinary person _IS_.
Exactly. They see some people using they/them pronouns but they don’t know enough nuance to design targeted exclusions they just decide to fuck all trans people and it turns out they fuck some over a little bit more.
Yep. Shit, I'd be surprised if even a quarter of the Trump administration knew the difference between a "transsexual" and a "transvestite", and I'd bet you a dollar that at LEAST a quarter think "trans" is just an advanced form of "gay".
To be fair, I am a very advanced gay
