Are you buying the place or renting it? Do renters of such places just move their sink, oven, light fixtures, etc. around with them?

-
Renting. And yes, often they do
-
Wow; I guess I can sort of see the advantages of that but I imagine it makes moving much more of a pain. I hope you find some fixtures you're excited about!

yuuuup. I had an awkward first night before figuring out how to wire up some temporary single-bulb fixtures :/

My Swiss former supervisor told me about this once, specifically that German renters have to bring their own dishwashers with them. “It seems that for Germans, dishwashers are very intimate.”
-
Here in Switzerland, we have to wire up our own light fittings, but at least we don’t have to take out and replace a whole (formerly) fitted kitchen every time! I hope you have a good torch. :)
-
How does this work? There's a hole in the ceiling with our wires poking out?
-
Exactly! It was a huge shock when we first moved here. I thought we had to hire an electrician to connect the light fittings, but it turns out you can do it yourself, heh. It’s a very silly custom.
-
Yeah, I've changed light fittings and rewired our loft. Fun times. But I've seen Swiss electrics. You can rotate a plug 180°.
-
Some of them, yes…others have an extra prong, for added excitement when you go to the EU to give a talk and forget a converter for your laptop.
Not that I’d ever do that, of course.

No kitchen sink?? How does that even work? I remember being surprised in Japan that I had to supply my own kitchen appliances and all ceiling light fixtures. But the kitchen sink was there! [Insert cleverly worded “everything but the kitchen sink” joke]

I'm glad you post your Germany issues. Makes me feel better about going through all this too.

On one hand, this sounds super inconvenient. On the other hand, not having to live with the cheapest appliances the landlord could find seems like a plus.

Many a newcomer stepped into that trap :)

My first two days in my apartment, I only had the light on the kitchen stove. Then I found out I was lucky to have a kitchen...

No flooring sometimes as well. We saw places that just had the subflooring.

I feel like, if I were a landlord, I would not want tenants diy'ing electrical and plumbing????

Come on! Your expected to bring a sink when you move? That can’t be the norm.
