It's probably semi-intentional. They seem to have added logic to constantly find something inane and irrelevant to notify about whenever your notifications are empty, presumably to "boost engagement".

Stuff like "[someone you haven't interacted with in years] is interested in [event X] near you tomorrow" or "you haven't updated your 'about me' recently".
-
For me it's "[random person] has posted a photo." "[same random person] has commented on a photo [not mine, not one i'm tagged in" etc
-
Yeah. My suspicion is that maybe the "dig up random junk to add to notifications when they're empty" is bypassing your opt-outs from particular friends' stuff.

theres a similar thing with twitter; a couple of friends on their accounts on which they dont interact a lot (like, retweet, comment) get a similar sort of special notifications on what someone else tweetedpic.twitter.com/l853FLjfjd

I unfollowed all my rich friends because I got sick of them humble bragging about their overseas vacations. Just unfollow everything. You’ll be left with dog (or cat) videos and recipes.

I hate FB. I stopped using it for the most part. I posted there when I came out just so people would know. But that's the last time I really interacted there.

Facebook has been doing this to me for my friend's ex-husband for YEARS and I can't get it to go away.

I removed it from my phone a few months ago. I still@have the messenger for when family wants to reach out to me. Other than that, I check Facebook maybe once a month on my computer.

Did you ever define some of your friends as "close friends?" I think that was an option once, and it'd flag them to send you everything they do. I'm also not sure it can be turned off any longer.

Use device OS level push notification restrictions on Facebook and Messenger. Stops all inbound notifications from them, but it also stops that shit.

That’s why I have no friends on fb. I use it for groups & nothing else. I have lost touch with people I like, but I wasn’t satisfied w/ that kind of impersonal interaction anyway.

I see that also for one friend. I have never made a custom setting in FB. It really is a mess that should go away.
