Coming to the US from the UK, it weirded me out that purple *didn't* taste like blackcurrants. Worse, blackcurrants were almost entirely unknown thanks to the century-long blackcurrant growing ban here

In the US, purple is the color of "concord grapes" so it tastes ok – not the best, but pretty good. In Europe, purple is the color of "royalty and nobility" so it tastes disappointing, vaguely bitter, and not at all like you were led to believe.
