"Je ne comprends pas", "je ne parle pas français", & "le toilette, s'il vous plaît (with an uncomfortable look on my face)" were about all I needed in Paris. In the countryside, though... hoo.

I'll add a very slight emendation (in case this happens to come up urgently)—"les toilettes," plural. (The only difference in pronunciation is that you say "lay" instead of "leh" before.) If you're forming a whole-ass sentence: "Où sont les toilettes, s'il vous plaît?"

I was just in Paris last week. The people were very nice. I only knew a few basics like bon jour and merci. I had a map, a Frommer’s guide and Google. It was great.

Last time I was in France I just started with “je ne comprends pas” (I don’t understand) or even “je parle une petit peu francais” (I speak a little bit of French) and people would just shrug and start speaking English it was weird

The locals of Paris tend to be a lot friendlier if you *try* to speak French and will often help you. Or so my high school French teacher said.
