My take on John McCain is this: we should absolutely be willing to point out his role in damaging many, many lives. He was a public figure. We should also be using this as a chance to educate on the pervasive apologetics of imperialism.

I think back to who I used to be, and how it took me a long, long time to contextualize that there was evil in the things I thought were good. That evil demands that it be allowed to dictate the terms of how you address that evil.

Basically my point is that it’s one thing to call out McCain, but it’s also worth talking about why we have a culture that demands reflexive elision of his deeds, and how that interacts with imperialism overall

As a foreigner I've always thought the (excessive?) indulgence in praising troops and veterans alike during unrelated events (say a midseason NBA game) was only motivated by the will to brainwash people and avoid them asking too many questions as to was actually happening abroad.
