It's not a total loss. According to Hickam's blog, he's deleted his tweets on the matter and has made amends with Naomi, who reached out to apologize to him. He's pulling his weight to get her a position in the aerospace industry better than the one she lost.

NSC has no direct authority over NASA (it's a committee of a number of cabinet/sub-cabinet officials — Hickam's role is on the advisory council to NSC). Exchange may be real, but "instantly fired" is definitely fake.
