Hey, dumb question. I've never travelled internationally before. How do passports...work? like, I have one but I've never used it. What do I *do*?
You won’t need a visa to enter the UK for a conf if you are not being paid (or even if you are getting a small stipend). You can show up, the immigration official will ask a few questions, and assuming they pass muster, he’ll give you a stamp for Leave to Enter.

They just don't want you to be "employed in the UK" which requires a resident visa. Lots of business people and "celebs" come in, do their thing, get a nominal amount and depart.

With how much UK visas cost... You'd think you being employed or not wouldn't be an issue...

The UK especially does not want folks coming, staying, and taking local jobs that might be filled by the populace.

That's just silly
