AFAIK this hasn't been true since their public launch; I specifically tested this when stickers started rolling out. But even if Twitter's perfect, still a good idea to do local obfuscation. Who knows if a future bug might break it, or if they're storing the unredacted versions?

Uhg, Twitter made a fake redaction tool? How did I miss this?
-
I don’t know, but I have 100% had images come back with stickers removed
-
Do you have a recommended (Android) app for local blurring? Do video ones exist?
-
Blurring does not prevent recovery of the blurred content. Simplest safe approach is solid-color rectangle. I don't know a good app right off; sadly the standard gallery app's edit feature lacks it.

Most importantly, you have to destroy the source image somehow. Posting any image can expose you to discovery of it if you were to be subpoenaed later on. Destroying the source ensures you can’t accidentally expose someone later.
-
Okay this is impossible to do in the moment, I'm just gonna only post pics of cops.

Whoa, really? In IOS it adds copies of the photos with the stickers and crops that I did in Twitter....that’s metadata? Understood by the OS?
-
It may have changed recently but twitter has historically delegated a LOT to the client and this was definitely once the case

(I worked on the original implementation of stickers and iirc they created a new image w a sticker embedded and tweeted that, along w a bounding box of where to draw the animation, which is just overlaid on top of the sticker position. may have changed since tho)

The original images are still stored on the device if you add stickers through the app

hmmm tbh you could add a delete original toggle? at least on android that would be doable ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

if folks don't have an editing tool handy they can also add stickers, take a screenshot, crop + post that

Wait what? It seems like someone could commit an enormous amount of fraud with the amount of people who post their ID documents using those stickers

Last time I tried to read a stickered image via Web mobile, the stickers were embedded (although animations were then rerendered in by the app). I'd be very interested in proof of concept if you've tested this recently.

Also, you can bet that Twitter itself keeps the originals around, so that's subpoenable information. Or something they might even blankly give law enforcement access to

also, same thing must be considered when blacking out text in images, as it turns out that the "markers" in many apps dont just draw a #000000 line into the image, but there is often some layer transparency remaining that allows info to be extracted with contrast tinkering
