It’s weird how they can shut down massive sections of the city where there are planned protests out of “an abundance of caution” but they can’t deny a permit to Nazis for that reason.

There is absolutely no difference here except for political stance. They are doing the things they last year claimed they were powerless to do.

Former Mayor
@MikeSigner lied to ProPublica about credible threats of violence, and the rally proceeded and Heather died. Yet now, absent any credible threats of violence, the city is denying the community free movement and free speech.Show this thread -
Why do I get to say
@mikesigner lied? Because I wrote the civilian intelligence brief that documented several, many of which came to pass.Show this thread -
And I handed it to him personally. And he admitted these failures to me in open council.

Nevertheless, free speech in America *is* dying and it’s dying, fittingly, at Thomas Jefferson’s feet.

I’m not going to advocate for destruction. But I will shed no tears if the University, or the city, were to get struck by divine lightning and burn.

If Nazis weaponize free speech so badly that cities have to issue states of emergency to crack down on free speech from non-Nazis maybe they should just go ahead and ban the Nazis?

There are few to zero Nazis coming to Charlottesville this weekend. The lock-down of the city is essentially a giant middle finger to local residents and anti-Nazi demonstrators.

Please give me an example of how free speech is being curtailed. You are a smart person and must know that the closure of the Lawn is not a hinderance on free speech (you can go speak elsewhere).

Im having trouble discerning your opinion. You condemn the city for granting Nazis a permit yet you say that free speech is dying. Freedom of speech is about criticizing your govt. Not spreading nazi filth. If hate is how one uses their voice, they do not deserve a voice. Period.

I may be reading it wrong, but I think the point is how, when they knew there was danger, they still let Nazis rally. This year, they're denying everyone the right they allowed Nazis to have, opposed to only targeting hate groups.
