3. The downtown shutdown is a setup for all involved. There are two entrances, a block a part, right by the parking garage where DeAndre was beaten last year. Those entrance points are natural congregation spots--and there's no good way to separate any Nazis from the regular folk

4. The hazard of overpolicing is real. I lived through the uprising in Baltimore. A phalanx of unexperienced cops in a pressure cooker situation can end very, very badly, particularly for POC.

5. That being said, I don't envy the police this weekend--but it's their job to get it right. Having watched VSP, Charlottesville, Albemarle and UVa cops last year, I don't have a lot of confidence that they will.

6. I did a hotel search for Cville yesterday, and up 29 in Standardsville and Culpeper. There are plenty of rooms still available everywhere, leading me to believe that the Nazi numbers will be small.

7. Small does not equal 'non-existent'. In some ways, a small contingent of Nazis who are NOT deterred by overwhelming police presence could prove themselves much more dangerous than a large, easily-spotted mass of Nazis.

10. My only regret from last year is that I didn't go right down the stairs at the Rotunda and join the students surrounding the statue. Given what I knew at the time, it was the right decision. But--I know more now. And I won't make the same mistake twice.
