The German pilot, after initially disabling the plane, trailed the pilot back to the English Channel and twice was able to leisurely line up bursts of fire in an attempt to shoot it down. When he failed, he flew alongside, saluted, and turned home.

This is because of good engineering. Aircraft are designed with redundant systems in place so that if one fails the plane can still fly. This is true of all aircraft, including civilian passenger aircraft.

When single points of failure exist, there is often extensive and expensive work done to fix it. The MD-11 jackscrew is one good example.
