First, be there. Show up. Be a body and a voice. And remember you are not a leader here, and if you feel uncomfortable, you should. If the police make you scared, good. This is how our Black communities feel every day.

Second, don’t go home until all people of color go home. Do not do like what happened at j8 last year, where folks left when the KKK did and people got attacked by cops.

Third, be prepared. Hydrate and be nourished. Don’t be a liability, but do know that if you need medical attention it will be there. The left takes care of its own.

Fourth, remember the cops are not your friends. They serve you, but they do not serve the people you are defending. This is the difference.

Sixth, be smart about it and follow others’ leads. They know what they are doing and I trust them and so should you.

Seventh, put your ego away. People you are defending might even get angry at you. That’s ok. It’s not about you.

Go downtown and support C’ville businesses. Even if you gotta go through check points. Go there to remember Heather Heyer. Hate loses.

Emily, would you recommend downloading and using the ACLU's Mobile Justice app for recording and reporting police encounters?
