Look, I mourn for Fred's loss, but I've been tracking the "3-D printed guns" story since Ars Technica first reported on it a few years ago. And the panic is not warranted.

This is a polymer 80% lower for a Glock. This is the kind of thing that will become "3D printable" in the next few days.pic.twitter.com/PY1f0UVUzf

As you can see, you can buy it for $150, and it is far higher quality material and construction than what a 3D printer puts out.

It is true that this part alone is untraceable (no serial #) and undetectable by a metal detector. However, it is still detectable by xray and backscatter devices. It is 100% legal and has been for a while. It also cannot shoot anything.

In order to make this work you need a firing pin assembly, a trigger assembly, a barrel, and a slide. Almost all of which are made out of steel alloy.pic.twitter.com/fw3q8qbXwU

This is the current status quo. Printing your own polymer lower changes nothing. It's not even illegal right now. No laws are changing. This is literally an energy sink.

Not really. Unless you mean for the owners.

Thank you!! If I could afford a 3D printer and all of the materials necessary to make this happen, I could afford at LEAST 3 guns at any gun show, no background check.
-
And that's even before you spend a month trying to get the 3D printer to reliably and accurately print anything.

And 80% receivers have been a thing for a while
-
And not -that- difficult to finish as long as you’re a passingly proficient machinist. The 3D printed guns hysteria makes me cringe for so many reasons.

People should be aware of "unfinished receivers" and how they've been used to make guns that have already been used in mass shootings.
Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

Honestly you should be a lot more concerned that nazis have so much political power than that they have so much firepower.
-
we can be concerned about more than one thing justin
-
We can be concerned about 1000 things but if we want to get anything done we still have to do Attention Triage.
-
justin, what priority would you assign "nazis are rallying in portland on saturday; organizers said come armed, and in cville and dc the week after" then. personally this feels like a more immediate threat to people's actual lives but you know maybe my priorities are bad
-
Those are important problems but discussion of this should also include that the scale of this will only increase if Nazi's continue to gain actual political power and democracy continues to be eroded.
-
How do you propose we address these important problems
-
Vote Trump-supporting politicians out of office, as the highest priority.
-
Have you considered that maybe there's more to the dynamics of political power than just elections, or do you think we voted spencey out of showing up in Cincinnati
