That referendum was *very* vaguely worded and would not have resulted in independence,just permission to negotiate the possibility in order to WRING more concessions from English Canada. Massive fraud on both sides of course.

I guess I take issue with saying Canada "barely survived" or it was a Quebexit. The referendum going the other way would almost certainly have resulted in Canada continuing with the same 10 provinces.

Don't neglect the often cartoonish racism of many yes voters, including the then-premier who literally got drunk and blamed the loss on immigrants at his wannabe victory rally less than an hour after the result was called.
