It’s really screwed up that I need a routine medical test but there’s no obvious way to get it done that won’t result in creepy privacy violations.

I have an exciting new theory about why I’ve been sick since August: it’s chronic sleep deprivation. I opened a GitHub issue. I’d write more about it, but apparently I need to go to bed now.https://github.com/waldoj/sickness/issues/31 …

It would be so stupid if I’ve been sick for nearly a *year* simply because I need another ~45 minutes of sleep each night.https://twitter.com/waldojaquith/status/1018319197825269760 …

I don't want to get ahead of myself here, but I feel, like, 30% less crappy than I normally do at 9 PM. Maybe it's luck, maybe it's the extra water, maybe it's the extra sleep, maybe it's the exercise, but something *might* be working.

My brain...works again? I’m thinking things. Lots of things. Mostly coherently. I don’t know if it’s the exercise or the water or the sleep (it’s probably the sleep), but something is working and it’s wow.

I feel like I’m waking from a long nap. “OK, where was I?”

I woke up sick yesterday, thanks to my damn wiener kids, and the result is that I had exactly one day of a functioning brain. My carefully-crafted self-experimentation has been sunk by a virus. On the plus side, I slept for 11 hours last night.

Well, a CT scan today ruled out sinus cysts, a chronic sinus infection, & a cerebrospinal fluid leak. It looks more and more likely that I’ve just gotten ~45 minutes too little sleep every night since August. I’ll have a better idea when this cold clears up. Too many variables.

My cold has mostly cleared up, and my brain works really well. again I feel like I'm at maybe 80%. Physically, I'm meh, but mentally, I'm sharper than I've been in a year. I'm 90% sure that my problem was chronic sleep insufficiency. I think complete recovery will take a while.

I've pieced together data and, as best as I can tell, from late August until 2 weeks ago, I was getting 6.5 hours of sleep on a bad night, and 7.5 hours of sleep on a good night., probably averaging 7 hours. Turns out that's enough to feel terrible all of the time.

I wondered if that was it, but my wife and I figured out that this all started 1 week after my eldest kid started kindergarten, and we all had to start waking up an hour earlier.
