Whay worries me about fascism isn't the cops, or the FBI, or any gun-toting agent of the state. They will be fundamentally the same. What worries me is how all the process and administration changes.

Which is why a smaller Government is better, socialism in theory is appealing, but the larger state machinery needed to ‘fairly’ redistribute resources is inevitably more inefficient as well as oppressive, as you rightly say.

That is exactly not my experience. We have successfully changed the traffic situation for our little street. And just now, a citizens movement has managed to get the first mobility law in Germany passed to finally give more consideration (some!!) to pedestrians and bicyclists.
