As a marginalized person, it's often frustrating seeing how infrequently hate crime charges get used. But legally speaking, they're difficult to prove.
This should put all of the desperate alt-right conspiracy theories to bed. James Fields, much like Jacob Goodwin and Richard Preston and Michael Ramos and Daniel Borden, was not acting in self-defense.
