This is not exactly right. Many districts in New York do not have elections today because our reps are running unopposed. It doesn't mean we shouldn't be vigilant, but things were not changed.
-
I've lived, and voted, in other states. You still need an election. Otherwise it's just a coronation.
-
What's the point of an election when there is no opposition? At that point its just a symbolic waste of funds
-
By that logic, we should do away with most general elections in NY, because they're uncontested. The whole point is to give voters a chance to affirm (or not) the candidate. Without it, democracy has no meaning.
-
I get that, but it seems the bigger issue then is uncontested elections. When elections are majority wins, then uncontested elections are pointless, as they don't have to put forth any effort I don't think I've ever lived in a place where there isn't an opposing candidate
-
The elections are uncontested because there are laws that make it prohibitive to attempt to contest a primary without the backing of the party, and others that make it impossible for third parties to run their own candidates seriously.
-
We're talking about a state where you have to petition for the right to write-in a candidate. The parties have complete control over the whole process. Voters can't affect it at all.
-
Well, that sounds shitty.... like I get that states have control over how elections are run inside the state, but that seems like an obvious recipe for corruption. I didn't know any of that about NY elections
