I call myself an Immigrant (white American in Norway) because then when people say ‘oh, but I don’t mean immigrants *like you*’ I can press them on what that means and why they feel that way. People find it surprising, and there’s room for learning in that surprise.

I call myself an immigrant because I'm staying. I think of expats as temporarily here.

Maybe semantics to some. Regardless of the instrument used to keep a legal status, immigrants are driven out of their own countries (for whatever the reason). It is less of a choice. Is the loss of confidence that your own country can protect you or will allow you to succeed.

There is the legal process by which a non-citizen comes to live in a country and then there are the actual reasons. Cf. James Baldwin.

I got out of the US at 12 years just before the educational system exceptionalism propaganda had a chance to really take root in my naive soul, so I refer to myself as an expatriate ex-patriot.

Huh, I didn't know that European refugee visas were available to Americans. Not a concern currently, but if you have a chance if you could point me in the right direction to find out more I'd really appreciate it.

Being an immigrant is not the same as being a refugee, the terms does, in my opinion, not convey that you are even marginalisied. But maybe there's a difference between the German innuendo and the English one

With the abomination we have now in the White House, I think you and others deserve sympathy and consideration. You're not the only one. I, too, might have to flee to a safer, more democratic country.

Using the same language for yourself can be an act of solidarity. A marker that lends a tiny piece of your privilege to a group that needs it.

I find "person" more or less covers it.
