In the midst of multiple crises, I think about ways we can look long term to build sustainable futures, and I wanna put down some thoughts.

The biggest thing we need is skills. We need truck drivers and nechanics and lawyers and more. We need people speaking languages, particularly the languages of the places affected by whatever shithorrible policy du jour we're facing.

We need craftsmen and videographers and technologists and archivists. We need healthcare advocates. Oh god we need healthcare advocates.

And with them the tools: hand trucks and dollies and the like. If you've ever been given 2 hours to help move a homeless camp you'll feel this.

But the big thing is skills. I can think of dozens of times when a translator's been needed or a healthcare advocate or really any support person with specialized knowledge. Long term sustainability means we need to be spreading that knowlesge.

Printers! We need professional printing capabilities! Oh gods y'all one of the things that strikes me most about the activism in Berlin is the quality of the print campaigns.

(ps in case you're wondering why I have so many typos it's because I rarely use autocorrect and I reduce eyestrain by not forcing vergence on my phone screen)

I honestly think one of the most useful things you can do as an individual right now is to start becoming bilingual. Look at your local community demographics and start learning that language. Spanish in the US, sure. But maybe also Vietnamese or Arabic or Turkish or whatever.

Take first aid certifications. Learn firearm safety. Take healthcare navigation classes (seriously, as someone who has had to support a community affected by terror this is huge).

The fewer capabilities we delegate to the state and structures of authority, the stronger we'll be.

Systems capitalize on our ignorance. Not everyone can know evertything but with solidarity we can share that burden.
