Since
@bodhijones has spent the last several hours polluting my notifications with his own defense, I'd like to propose the following:Show this thread -
Since you're now trans,
@bodhijones, please provide my followers with an explanation of which of the following things you'll be voluntarily parting ways with. - healthcare rights - employment opportunities - right to legal documentation - ties to family and friendsShow this thread -
I'll be further awaiting a detailed explainer from you on the name change process in your home state and will be expecting material action on the forfeiture of these privileges and rights, with evidence, of course.

Do you remember "Je Suis Charlie"? Do you think all those people were actually named Charlie? And assuming they weren't, does that somehow change their message of solidarity?
-
Charlie wasn't a margalized class, that makes a fucking difference. It wasn't even a fucking person.
-
does he think "Charlie Hebdo" was just the name of a guy

Seems like Bodhi is trying to say something nice. I think he’s just trying to be supportive and cool, which we could really stand to see more of from cis/het people. Let’s try not to tear down positive attempts. If your comments are what cis/het ppl have to deal with, why try?
-
I see what he’s trying to do but I think the problem that he’s for all his positive sentiment, he’s isn’t any of the identities he’s listed. As a cis, straight white man what he does have is enormous privilege to affect change and through action, be a real ally to the folks who
-
are living with the realities of the abuses of Trump and his followers. I’ve seen a few tweets now from different folks saying expressly “we don’t need you to pretend to “be” us. We need you to be you and use that privilege to act for change”.
-
While I appreciate the sentiment, I can also see why folk, trans and WOC especially are pointing up that their identities aren’t a choice, can’t be ‘taken off’ and the hops that those of us with the power and privilege to do act from that place.
-
Frankly her response contributes to the problem.
-
Gotta disagree. This is the kind of bad "allyship" that needs to be called out. Look at the statement: "Until [Trump] is out of office." I dislike this guy who's been in office for 2 years, so I feel like that's equal to your centuries of oppression and I can wear your identity.
-
The sentiment might be well-intended, but it comes off deeply insulting. Especially with that "until." If someone is acknowledging that they can conditionally walk away from oppression once it no longer suits their political agenda, they're not as good an ally as they think.
-
Basically, good intentions don't equal good allyship. Using privilege to call out other privileged people is allyship. Assuming someone else's marginalizations is not.

25,000+ likes. I'm ill.

I don’t understand. I read that as “Trump’s an asshole. As a privileged person I have a responsibility to stand up for the down trodden.” I’m not trying to mess with you, I legitimately don’t understand what the context is to object to his statement. Thanks in advance for reply.
-
it is performative allyship. an ally doesn't appropriate another's identity in order to fight with them. guess what bodhi did?
-
Exactly. I can be an ally without monopolizing the conversation or pretending to understand things I don't.
