Does anyone genuinely believe that, in the extremely low probability we have elections with integrity again, and a Democrat wins, that the next President will fully eschew the new standards set by this one?

I feel like McCain Obama was pretty sincere, both leaders acknowledging the other was good people despite their political differences (disclaimer I was 13 and I spend most of my life being wrong)

I am certain that some people have little enough familiarity with history, and a strong enough immersion in post-1960's Democratic Party heroism stories, that they believe this.

Nixon/Ford/Carter is the example. A lot of norms Trump is breaking now were established after watergate to reestablish checks. But it was a different time.

Yeah, but they were only established as norms. That meant that the actual problems could be swept under the rug and the imperial presidency stayed intact. You're basically talking a constitutional amendment on presidential ethics, financial disclosures, divestment, etc.

Agree something with more backbone is needed. Campaign money was not as big a deal either. I think financing also has to get fixed.

Not to mention bribery of Congress, which is basically legal now. The problem is producing an amendment that does what you want while being administered in such a way that it can't be sabotaged like the FEC has been. Making all campaigns federally/state funded might work.

The pattern of history is that when a President spreads out the powers of office, both official and unofficial, that those powers stick.

No. They won't be able to pass anything like that. They'd need 60 votes in Senate to overcome filibuster. 2/3rds in both house to overcome a veto. Even in most optimistic sceanario they won't get that much and I doubt GOP will come on board.

If trump is ousted you don't think there are GOP that would prevent those abuses again? I think after he is out they will all try to 1/2

It is always much easier to maintain a status quo than it is to establish and codify rules. Once broken it is hard to put things back together again. If Trump were ousted the GOP would probably become more extreme rather than reject Trumpism and his abuses.

Most of the major problems with america are inherent to the very structures that american society is built on, so elections by definition arent going to do anything to fix those problems. At least not in any reasonable timeframe, especially when the other party can undo all of it

I think that whoever wins will almost certainly take advantage of the fact that the window of acceptable behavior for a sitting POTUS has shifted so far away from anything approaching respectability.

The next person can literally jail their political opponents and everyone would be like "Oh, wow. Such restraint! We haven't seen this since Obama!"
