i've decided i need to take a different approach to the Fish Four Coloring problem, but am publishing my notebook of the initial approach in order to further research into Graph Coloring Fisheshttps://beta.observablehq.com/@tmcw/four-coloring-this-goddamn-fish …

i believe that a better way will be to take the straight skeleton of the lines rather than extracting the solid shapes, and with this fish skeleton i can generate a better topological fish mesh

oddly turning linework drawings into topologically-good vectorized lines is not a super well-solved problem; you get a lot of polygon extraction (potrace), but not that much for line networks. the state of the art seems to be geared toward streets and/or blood vessels

maybe? not as far as i've seen in my searches - good tooling for raster -> vector polygons, good stuff for vector manipulation, not that much for raster -> vector networks

Wracking my brain to recall what I used once, and I swear it was a like a @chris_whong thing he used to geojson @justgrimes but that can’t be right, can it?

I did indeed turn @justgrimes into geojson. According to my readme I used an online tool called vector magic to convert a raster, and manually mathed it into wgs84.https://github.com/chriswhong/justinGrimesGeojson …

This is surely unhelpful, but thanks for bringing up old fun useless geo projects. 🙌🏻

I love that nonsense. Useless geoprojects are necessary, imo
