fully agree: "it is not AI systems that should be regulated, but rather specific activities" but disagree w no-rules on training data. Must consider societal consequences of poorly trained systems over ease of data Ultimately this contributes to better models

Wow: “Andrew Gelman suggested that we agree to disagree, since science is full of disagreements and there is lots of room for progress using different methods. Unfortunately, the need to enrich statistics with new vocabulary is a mathematical fact, not an opinion.”

"move away from viewing AI systems ... assessed purely through their technical architecture, performance, and capabilities. ... instead be considered as active actors that change and influence their environments and the people and machines around them."

Using the World Values Survey, Yun Lu & show that individual religious participation increases protest participation. Importantly, they find, this positive association is STRONGER in more repressive countries. Check it out:

“there’s a wide and thorny gap between being able to articulate goals for AI such as fairness, transparency, and safety, and writing rules that would govern the thousands of decisions, big and small, that result in any given technology being built and used responsibly.”

Mm! Unexpected jewel in the Financial Times’ book review. David Boyle’s Tick the Box argues for reversing “an insidious trend that with the help of technology is removing people and common sense from institutional decision-making” ⁦
