A piece I wrote on Australia's visa regime and the right to leave any country and how such a system (and other destination countries) fosters irregular migration and harm

On a train in Italy. A teenage Chinese boy boards the train. A woman comments loudly: “There you go, we are all going to be infected.” He replies in perfect Italian with a Roman inflection: “Ma’am, in my whole life I’ve seen China only on google maps.” Applauses.

Stop calling Trump's plan a "Peace Plan." Like , we should all call it an Apartheid Plan. Because that's what it is.

Trump's underscores what the "peace process" has become: a fig leaf for Israel's entrenched discriminatory rule over Palestinians, says . The only viable path to lasting peace is one rooted in the dignity & respect of the rights of both Israelis & Palestinians

The occupation of Palestine is illegal. Settlements in Palestine are illegal. Palestinians have the right to return. Palestinians have the right to a viable state. And the struggle for freedom, justice & equality will prevail ✊🏽

Let’s see past this theatre, and be crystal clear on one thing: the Israeli state wants to grab as much land as possible with as few Palestinian people as possible on it. /1

On the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz- Birkenau, the US reintroduces public charges to block immigrants. Public charges were deliberately used by the US State Department to block German Jews fleeing the Nazis from emigrating in the 1930s.

The human rights impacts of the UK's facial recognition surveillance technology are profound: privacy violations, discriminatory policing, and fair trial issues re use of secret surveillance in court.

I am enormously grateful to the Lords and of course to the public who have been so supportive of the moral argument for providing safe routes for children to be reunited with their families here. It's now the turn of the Commons to show what they're made of.

This decision by the Human Rights Committee is important, but the attention-grabbing headline may seem to overstate, and thus obscure, its real significance. So here’s a (lengthy) thread that explains the decision in more detail. 1/20

Australia is simultaneously gripped by bushfires, floods, dust storms and hail storms. Lives and livelihoods have been lost, more than a billion animals have died, billions in property damage. This is what 2020 looks like. What 2040 looks like is still up to us.
