I’m old enough to 1) have a father who did fight in WWII , so I know what he called his fellow Soldiers, and 2) be in the Army before we started this Warrior crap. It was an attempt to fix a problem the Army itself created. It wasn’t a bad idea, it was just taken too far.
Fair - what negative and systemic effects have been inflicted on the army because of the use of the word “warrior”?
I feel like superficial changes reinforce the unwillingness or impotence of leaders to fix systemic morale problems. So warrior kind of reminds me of uniform changes like berets for everyone, with the exception that it also seems to encourage guys to act like jagoffs.
I think for me it's the insinuation that we're different or somehow better. "Warrior" can be associated with caste rather than occupation. It's subtle, and maybe unintended. But it chafes on me. The "sheepdog" crap is a whole other story...
And then there’s the US Space Force announcing that they will call their service members “guardians”. Yes, guardians like Marvel Comics’ “Guardians of the Galaxy”.
Over-emphasis of the tactical, of combat, and of unit and individual excellence in it, such that by the time officers arrive at the point where strategic thinking is required, the answer is merely grand-tacticalism that is angry at politics, media, ecomics, laws, and civilians.
And that is the officer corps you believe the military has today?
The term warrior has thousands of years of negative connotations across Indo-European cultures. Warriors are antagonistic to authority, fight for personal glory, & have a very problematic relationship with the feminine. We cannot cherry pick the 'good parts' out of this morass.
And we definitely can’t have soldiers who are those things.
financial alone. it costs millions every time some staffer or inept senior leader has one of these ideas to 'fix' a problem instead of fixing actual problems.
none whatsoever - not directly related to that alone the author brings up interesting points and is a talented writer, but it’s s a far reach for something that just isn’t there if anything it has been a net positive “by any other name would smell just as sweet”
