Days like today I regret going to college, getting a real job, and living in the real world instead of following my calling to become a strange but ultimately benign old lady who lives in the woods with too many books and too many cats.

This is the goofiest fucking shit. It will only lead to more confusion. Just count the whole thing up, double-check it, and *then* send it out, like they do in functional countries!

Fun fact: if you design an app that fails and you end up blaming your customer, you did a bad job.

I'm usually on the other side but it's really outrageous to blame older, diligent people who handled this for years then got handed a bunch of confusing rules and bad tech by young people!

I know caucuses can be a bit confusing to non-Americans, so here’s how they work: first they gather up a great pile of stones, then everyone in town arrives, then the families take a piece of paper from the black box, and if you pull a paper with a black spot you get sacrificed

Just because cable news has air time to fill does not mean that our election system is in crisis or that we should have concerns about the system's integrity. We need to train anchors and headline writers about how to responsibly cover election night w/o damaging democracy 2/2

While it is unfortunate that Iowa had technical problems last night, I think the bigger concern is that the media is totally incapable of dealing with slow election results and they feed anxiety among the public 1/2

The media idiotically see legitimacy in terms of fulfilling a role in the news cycle and campaigns strategize around the news cycle. But actual legitimacy means getting the count right. Disappointing media and campaigns doesn't undermine the process, wrong official results do.

The IDP also screwed up by encouraging the expectation of speedy results. But the legitimacy of the process is undermined more by hyperventilating media reports of total disaster and campaigns claiming victory, encouraging conspiracy theories & releasing partial internal results.

The IDP screwed up with the dumb app. But they're doing the right thing going over the ballots to ensure they release accurate numbers. To call the legitimacy of the process into question because waiting irritates news junkies, campaigns and cable networks is totally pernicious.

I am one of those annoying "hand-marked paper ballots!" fanatics. We had them this year in Iowa. And they're serving their function. But if we're going to make them the norm, we need to fiercely resist expectations of, and pressure for, instant dispositive results.

The need for election night results is driven by television programming. Did we need to know the results of the Iowa Caucus last night? No. But the networks play that crazy election night “Decision 2020” music and we must have a “winner.”

not to pile on, but we REALLY should be calling a physician to ask about our nearly 12-hour caucus problem.

Pick one: fast election results or accurate election results. Lots of cable news money in the illusion of the former, but democracy can’t survive without the latter.

Let's not be cute here: I am talking about ANY person and ANY campaign peddling conspiracy theories about the Iowa Caucuses. ESPECIALLY if it's a candidate you support, speak out and say "we're better than this" & "don't let the Russians hijack the terms of our debate."
