@taralynnmulder I've just read your thread in response to the appalling act of racism you directed at @ladrianaherrera and @JenReadsRomance. As a black woman who is both academic and romance, I find your apology unconvincing and self-serving lip-service.

Foolish perhaps, but definitely not impulsive. Even this "apology" is not an apology to either the reviewer or the author you attacked. It is a "let's see if I can clean up this mess" before it damages my career, and yes I'm calling it that. 3/

Your profile indicated a faculty affiliation with
@Vassar & an emerging professional reputation within "Classical Studies" that I suspect needs to be protected at this moment. What I see with this thread is an attempt to mediate professional damage. 4/Näytä tämä ketju -
The problem: "the do not engage negative reviews" is as much a practice in academia as elsewhere. My reading of your action is that you may have assumed your academic badge offered some protection from a community you are not a part of. It did not. 5/

I follow
@ladrianaherrera &@JenReadsRomance. By way of intro: Margo Hendricks, Prof Emerita UC Santa Cruz, co-editor Women, Race & Writing, & author of articles on race, Shakespeare, gender & a fighter for diversity in pre-1700 academic studies. 6/Näytä tämä ketju -
I'm telling you this @taralynnmulder as a reminder academics on Twitter may wear several badges. The rhetoric you deployed as an apology or the idea that you "had" to protect your sister is deeply problematic and I'm calling you on it. 7/

Your sister's book needed to rise or fall on its own merits (just as your own professional writing must do). For one reviewer, it fell. Not your writing, not your problem. What concerns me more than anything is that you are college faculty. 8/

Why? Because you are what students of color may face in the classroom, what POC in Classical Studies will face at conferences or as an anonymous reader. You are that person who deliberately engages in micro-aggressive acts of racism then cries "sorry." 9/

As someone who has fought the racism battle in academic circles, I have a problem with your actions, both the original tweet and this "apology" that does lip-service to becoming "racially sensitive" & a better "white ally" without 10/

grasping that you should have been this before the tweet, and before I and
@ladrianaherrera reached out to Vassar. Had you been "racially"/"culturally" sensitive perhaps a discussion w/your sister about the insensitivity in the depiction of Africa 11/Näytä tämä ketju
