My first study on somatic mutations in corals! We found heterogeneity among different branches of individual corals. This occurs at a similar frequency as has been reported in humans. Intriguingly, for corals the most common form of that heterogeneity is losses of heterozygosity.

I've often thought damselfish should go in an anti-acknowledgements section of a paper (e.g. no thanks to damselfish for attacking me as I collected coral samples)

The gift that keeps on giving every holiday season - YEARS ago, made this for me as a joke. It never ceases to bring chuckles.

There is a lot of debate this weekend about whether biologists should learn to code. Of course they should. But, what I think is missed in the conversation is the point that many biologists don’t actually know enough biology. By that, I mean the broader literature.

As of yesterday: 48 ppl have died in Samoa from the measles outbreak (all are children except one). Samoa is only a population of 200,000 ppl. The scale of that would be as if: 960 people died in Aotearoa (New Zealand) or 72,000 people died in the U.S. Let that sink in.💔

What started purely as an exercise to orient my computationally ignorant 1st year grad student self with next-gen data, pipelines, and scripting turned into a novel set of results and the basis of the rest of my dissertation! More to come in the coming year(s)- stay tuned

This is an exciting time for somatic mutation research, with recent studies on humans, strawberries, fungi, and trees yielding insight into longevity, germlines, and selection on the cellular level. Colonial animals add another interesting set of dynamics to the literature.
