Defenders of capitalism have a bad habit of conceding that things would be better without greed, but since we're stuck with greed we need capitalism. This is wrong. Without greed, you'd still need prices to coordinate production. You'd still need capitalism.

Nope. Utterly intractable computationally. The USSR tried. Even today's biggest quant shops can't predict commodity prices a few months hence.

How the safety net is implemented is critical because it can distort (or eliminate) price information. The least destructive programs are probably ones that simply transfer money to those deemed to need it. Something like rent control is probably the worst.
