The “tough on crime” criminalization started with Reagan, but yes, both parties have been responsible over the years. It’s a terrible evil system. We have 4.5% of the world’s population and 25% of the world’s incarcerated population. It’s a cruel punitive system with no benefit.

No, we just don’t like criminals wandering around.

If you don’t like “criminals running around” you have to think a little deeper why society is the way it is. The current system is broken. What do you think is going to happen when someone with a record can’t get a job? You think they’re just going to starve to death?

If you break the law, it’s your fault. I have no patience for excuses. Good or bad.

If you want less crime we have to change the system and understand that what we are doing is not working. I used to have the same beliefs as you do. It just doesn’t work. A guy in Alamo throwing coke parties at his house is not going to be arrested like a kid at 6th & Market.

I grew up in the same neighborhood as Dan White, good old twinky defense himself and I came out okay. Humans with good principles and values don’t commit crimes. Seems you just want a free ride and no consequences. That’s never going to happen. Have a good one.

Did you ever do anything illegal in your lifetime but were never caught? Perhaps as a young man growing up? Did you smoke pot, did you drive intoxicated, did you take something from a store when you didn’t have money? Young people make mistakes. Some get away with it, some don’t.

And some are returned to the streets to deal lethal narcotics over and over and over again. Policing is far from perfect anywhere in the US., but with
@chesaboudin at the helm, it’s taken on a new dysfunction. Why aren’t arrests and sentencing even a small part of that equation?2 replies 0 retweets 2 likes -

Should we put everyone who commits a crime in jail forever? Young people make mistakes. Young people in neighborhoods with a lot of police are more likely to get caught and then have a felony on their record. How do they get a legitimate job after that? Most likely they don’t.

Of course not. I abhor both capital punishment and solitary confinement, in my view both unconstitutional. Some people do belong in prison for life though. What are they getting caught for? Some actions are felonies because society has judged them to be so harmful to others.

Yes, violent criminals have to separated from society. We can’t tolerate people who violently attack innocent people. I’m referring to the vast majority who are sent to prison for non violent crime and then can’t get a job when they get out. It creates slave labor for prisons.
