Can someone pls explain to me (yes, on Twitter) why Mastodon.social tells me creating an account there is "currently not possible"?

You have to join a different server as that one is full for now. Apparently it doesn’t matter which server you join

I suspect they’re getting overloaded by the flood of new users, because it’s the largest server. If you want to start with a small, focused instance for scientists and science journalists, try this:

Likely because (as I understand it - and my understanding is pretty limited!) it's a decentralised network, so the one you're trying to join likely is over capacity. Might be worth trying another server and signing up there.

They're swamped by the number of people migrating off the bird site, but they've set up a new Mastodon instance with the same rules as .social:

I believe that some major servers have been overwhelmed by the new user influx and have disabled sign-ups temporarily until they increased capacity.
