On this Memorial Day Weekend honoring the fallen, please take the time to read about the extraordinary efforts of Henry Bates Jr. of Cambridge, NY to ensure his high school classmate and fellow veteran Leo Vuori’s unmarked gravesite was recognized with a white marble head stone.
After years of effort, Mr. Bates and his family and friends reached out to my office to see if we could help him navigate the VA in their efforts to honor Leo’s legacy with a grave marker. #NY21’s dedicated Deputy District Director Joel Wood jumped into action.
When we heard the news from the VA that they would indeed be honoring Leo’s final burial place with a headstone. I had the opportunity to call Henry Bates and his son Tim to tell them the news. Henry broke down in tears over the phone.
It was an emotional phone call and it was clear that Henry’s voluntary hard work on behalf of his high school classmate ensured that Leo’s life of service was properly honored.
I am humbled everyday by the casework to help constituents - but this particular case, I will never forget.
