For millennials, myself included, 9/11 was a defining moment. I was 15, and had just started junior year (HS). It was when I knew I would follow in my dad's footsteps and serve in the military. It was also a day the US came together. But that lasted only until the shock wore off.
Looking back, our country has always had some citizens that we don't treat as equal. And for one moment, it felt like that was changed - until the hate against anyone who even appeared to be Muslim. And in our reaction to prevent another tragedy, we overreacted.
By granting the executive branch newly expanded authority, we set the stage for an authoritarian individual to wreak havoc from the White House. By becoming increasingly "patriotic" and hawkish, we reinforced the undercurrents of racism and intolerance.
While we will never forget where we were 19 years ago, let's stop adding to the tragedy. Others are not evil or less than because they are different. Our government functions best when we have 3 coequal branches. And the best way to support our troops is by ending forever wars.
It led to the creation of the Department of Homeland Security. A massive mistake.
