Tmw, Houston City Council is voting on the budget. @CMPlummer4 has introduced amendments to implement reforms to how we police our city. I stand with her in support of these policies.
Some facts about the budget:
The HPD budget is $1 billion. That is not a typo. It is 17% of the city's overall budget. In contrast, the Health Dept in the city is only 2% of the budget. @CMPlummer4's amendments only reallocate $11 million (~1% of HPD's budget)
The reforms @CMPlummer4 has proposed include
an independent police oversight board,
de-escalation training, and
creating a mental health mobile response unit as a police alternative
I support these reforms.
Houston, please contact your city council reps to tell them you support the budget amendment proposed by @CMPlummer4.

There is a rally Wednesday morning, 8 am at City Hall, to pressure the rest of the city council into taking action to reallocate just $11M of the $1B HPD budget to implement police reforms.
