As a teacher, I know what it’s like to struggle to make ends meet. I had to tutor and uber on the side. No teacher should have to work a second or third job. That’s why I’m fighting for a living wage of $60k a year for our teachers.

That increase, well deserved as it is, would have to be coupled with concessions on retirement. Observing the same age guidelines as social security would save the public a fortune and protect pension funds for the future. All public employees should do the same.

60k for 9 months of "work" would be amazing. Sorry, but I've worked with more teachers that deserve a pay cut than a pay raise. Maybe you could look into funding school lunches first so I can stop watching teachers/admin/classmates look down their nose at poor kids.

Starting wages in most states are too low but many states pay teachers quite well. A 1st year teacher should not be making same wage as a 10 year vet. Like all work you need to earn your stripes. Make starting wage higher to begin with. 1/2

I started under 30,000 as a teacher. I made more sanding pieces of metal in a factory job with overtime. When I paid for a Masters Degree and taught for 5+ years I got up to the 50,000 range. Many programs now incorporate Masters degrees in their licensure for teaching.

Many first year teachers are saddled with huge school debt. I wish there was a program to forgive student loan debt based on a percentage of years taught. For example, 10% of debt forgiven for each year of teaching. Plus an incentive to get advanced degrees.
