I just withdrew from a conference that was supposed to start this week. I’ve never backed out of an event before, and I know many of my readers will be disappointed. I want to explain here why I won’t be presenting.

I hate to let down readers, but I cannot in good conscience contribute to the campus life of an institution that calls for “disciplinary intervention” for those students who have “active involvement in a homosexual lifestyle.”

Even after TDOU’s exclusion and reading this code of conduct, I was on the fence about attending, because I know I’m letting down readers. Ultimately, though, I have chosen to withdraw.

To be clear, I bear absolutely no ill will to the authors who will still attend. I know they will have important conversations during their time there. Those readers need you!

To the students I would have gotten to meet this week: please know how deeply sorry I am. I will post a school visit video on the homepage of http://www.eliotschrefer.com the day of my appearance, so I can say hello and so that you can still hear my presentation.

For more clarity on the books missing from the festival's order form (which was for the adult day),

I feel like this is a step above (below?) discriminatory; it is genuinely predatory.

It’s a private school with standards that people voluntarily agree to. They aren’t forcing LGBTQ+ students to attend.
