I understand why the use of “warrior” is effective as a recruiting tool. But I also worry it’s a bad precedent that undermines the norm that soldiers in the U.S. are first and always citizens.

In an AP interview (1) complains that people fail to treat the Saudis as innocent til proven guilty in a grisly murder they undoubtedly committed; (2) defends not visiting our troops in a combat zone. All we need to know about his fitness for office right there.

And I will add this: to say that the conservative thinkers to look to are those who "accept the populist turn" and hope to "supply coherence and intellectual ballast" to it is, in essence, a form of power worship -- a different way of bending the knee to those in charge.

I often agree or at least am stimulated by . Not this time. An inquisitor searching for heretics and apostates (a word he uses) to expel is expressing a preference for dogma over reflection, and a preference for a creed over civil discourse.

The Saudis appear to have murdered a US resident (& a contributor). The Chinese have arrested the head of INTERPOL. The Russians have used chem weapons on UK soil, etc. The worst impulses of brutal regimes are coming fwd bc/ no one is standing up against them.

Women who have confronted lawmakers over Kavanaugh to tell their own stories of sexual assault are actually "paid professionals only looking to make senators look bad," Trump says.

My daughter tells me that my tweets show that I am woke. What the hell does that mean? Is it a plural of wok (I'm not a Chinese skillet)? An ungrammatical equivalent of awake (gets harder the older you are)? Or is it just another word for cranky, which is what I really am?

And to be clear, I have no problems with cantankerous old white guys, being one myself. Its just that this really doesn't quite look like America, if you know what I mean.

I think this picture illuminates the problem for the country just now - and more so, for the GOP in the long run.

Just read it and is right - its a powerful and disturbing piece. I don't think we'll go as far as the European states did in the 1930's, but some of the phenomena are definitely similar. Very much worth looking at.

Press is so shocked HHeitkamp voted in a way with no obvious, immediate political reward. Ya know, some people think the Senate is a unique place to leave your mark, let the consequences be damned. Some people aren't sniveling cowards afraid they'll never get as cushy a job
