A recurring trade policy phenomenon.....when the Reagan administration restricted sugar imports in early 1980s, it was soon restricting imports of confectionery products, including cake mixes, because firms were sifting out the sugar to avoid the import quotas! 🎂🥮🍰

In this blog, and I speculate about the consequences of Brexit for EU trade policy. We argue that strong emphasis on 'level playing field' in EU-UK trade talks, might reverberate through the EU's trade policies in general 👇

MPs have voted against New Clause 10 being read a second time, by 344 votes to 254. This new clause would have required the Government to seek to negotiate continuing full membership of the EU’s Erasmus+ education and youth programme.

There are some spectacular images from Edinburgh’s Torchlight Procession. But I was in the city today and I suspect it might be more fun for tourists than residents just now. The place is completely gridlocked!

There's been a lot of anecdotal evidence about how tariffs are behind the manufacturing slump. Now the Federal Reserve proves it, finding that the trade war is hurting the sector it was ostensibly supposed to help:

Interesting findings from new Fed study: "While the longer-term effects of the tariffs may differ from those that we estimate here, the results indicate that the tariffs, thus far, have not led to increased activity in the U.S. manufacturing sector."

Twenty-five yrs ago, when my kids were little, I was a single mom on welfare. One Christmas, their presents were Christmas Cap’n Crunch & candy, bought w food stamps, bc that’s all I had. The next time you judge the person in front of you at the grocer’s, be kind.
