There, I fixed your evolution and ecology department’s science wall of fame ⁦⁩ ⁦⁩ • Has anyone else noticed how few women are on the walls in our esteemed institutions? • •

While working on some analyses, I caught myself silently fuming at my past self for poor data management and organization, then realized that my frustration is a sure sign of growth and learning - I'm in grad school to improve, not stay the same!

cw: suicide Today would’ve been my biological mother’s 45th birthday. She died by suicide in 2017. I never got to meet her. Hug someone you love extra tight today ❤️

I recently got the advice (from someone I want to be like!) to listen the most to the advice of the people you want to be like. This has hugely changed my life for the better.

Quick reminder to my fellow white dudes: If we assume different parts of the population are roughly equally talented at whatever we're talking about, then white-male bias necessarily drives out qualified candidates. That means: increased diversity will lead to *increased* quality

“Given that so many female scholars drop out, they often become overqualified research assistants for their partners, which may be a reason why married men actually publish more than single men or women and achieve tenure faster.”

It’s grad application season and I see a lot of “I would never take a student who didn’t contact me!” comments. A reminder that there are a lot of first-gen students out there who might not know that this is a thing and they deserve a shot at discussing their interests w/ you.

Ok folks, as per usual it’s Christmas dinner and there are 20 people who think you can be racist against white people... against me. And they want references for all my points. Any recommendations? 😬 already got:

Holiday conversation quick reference guide for family members of grad students: Instead of: When will you finish your degree? Try: What are you doing for fun this week? Instead of: What are you doing after graduation? Try: What are you excited about right now?
