DC statehood — which I have supported for decades — is now more palatable to some for horrid reason: DC is now quite gentrified. It’s been talked about for decades that that was The Plan: give DC statehood when it was white enough.
Soon after coming to Congress, I got the first-ever vote on the #DCStatehood bill in either chamber of Congress, but it did not succeed. Today, we get the second vote on the bill and the first-ever passage. A lot has changed in 27 years.

As summarized in Dunbar-Ortiz' book Indig. Hist. of US, this was the same legally sanctioned ethnic cleansing process that the Western territories had to follow to achieve statehood as well.
