The designers of the Emancipation Statue in Lincoln Park in DC didn’t take into account the views of African Americans. It shows. Blacks too fought to end enslavement. That’s why I’m introducing a bill to move this statue to a museum.pic.twitter.com/A0MOnISH1N

Yeah, so since when has the left had even the tiniest grasp of nuance?

Douglass’ criticism of Ball’s statue was recorded in ‘Emancipation and the Freed in American Sculpture’ in 1916. https://library.si.edu/digital-library/book/emancipationfree00murr …pic.twitter.com/PAWy0EtmHy

Great addition to the discussion. Most people lash out with silly memes or shallow drither, but this is a rare and valid point. I can see the justification for putting it in a museum and having a new piece commissioned. It's the right thing to do.

Rather than move it I suggest the city commission another statue: this one with Lincoln kneeling and the freedman standing. That would symbolize the critical roll the freedmen played in making Lincoln who he became: the great emancipator.

I believe it's incredibly arrogant to tear down a 19th century statue funded by those who Lincoln emancipated and replace it with a statue that honors 21st century sensibilities.

My family has been here for generations and never saw an issue with this statue. We still live down the street from it. As it was paid for by freed slaves, that's should be all that matters. Keep the statue in Lincoln Park.

Art can evolve to match the times. This imagery causes grief to others, and that should count too for you.
