In his 1954 #SOTU address, President Eisenhower said: “In the District of Columbia, the time is long overdue for granting national suffrage to its citizens and also applying the principle of local self-government to the Nation's Capital.” #DCstatehood is 219 years overdue.
In 1955, President Eisenhower led his party again: “I renew my request that the principle of self-government be extended and the right of suffrage granted to the citizens of the District of Columbia.” #DCstatehood
And in 1956, as Eisenhower called on Congress to bring democracy to DC another time. I was in the Capitol tonight to challenge President Trump to do the same.
