The District of Columbia was specifically created as a political free zone for the seat of government when many wanted it in Philadelphia or New York. It’s not supposed to be a “state.” Could DC support itself as other states do? I don’t think so! An excuse for 3 more Democrats.

And women and Africans Americans weren’t supposed to vote, and senators weren’t supposed to be popularly elected. And Washington, DC, wasn’t supposed to have 700,000 residents. Things change, you know!

I don't see how this could be Constitutional. The seat of government of the USA cannot be both a state and what is supposed to be representative of all states.

No one wants that. No real person from
#thedistrict would want to give up their rights! Not to mention changing that law would grant the U.S. its own little "Vatican." Not a good idea for the real "#WashingtonDC", a great idea for that gentrified place#DC leaders call home! -
This is a lie and I am pretty sure this was tweeted by a bot. This “person” does not speak for the citizens in DC. “Real
#WashingtonDC” - please go away. You are actually promoting disenfranchising those very people. Please go away.#disinformation campaign#racist#bot -
Ha... Lived in the DMV all my life. Graduated from Herndon High School. But if you maybe thought about it... There is a reason why the federal govt. Was given land, and that was to ensure that this didnt happen. Now you new age people just think its a great cause to stand behind.
-
I thought it about it plenty, thank you. When the federal gov was given the land NO ONE LIVED HERE. The idea that people living in the capital city poses a threat to democracy is ludicrous. Look around the world this happens NOWHERE.

Just one question.. Why would DC get Statehood? Or how? What happened to the Va part of DC? They took it back. So why wouldn't Maryland then take back the land they loaned? What about that fact?
#Factsnotfiction. -
This is scatterbrained. When has the state of Maryland passed a resolution saying they want their land back and how would statehood trigger this? Please explain to how this scenario would play out. It wouldn’t because it is not real.
-
There's your Maryland ref.
-
This does not rebut anything I previously stated.

To get past trump tell him Obama didn’t introduce a state into the country. We may have to deal with an inflated ego but I’m willing to endure that for
#DCStatehood and#puertoricostatehood -
Puerto Rico too would be awesome.

There’s a fundamental reason DC is not a state and should remain so!
-
Don’t mention it or anything.

Worth noting that in the 38th Congress, the bill numbered
#HR51 established the Freedmen's Bureau, which did critical work for formerly enslaved African Americans in the District of Columbia (as well as across the South). https://memory.loc.gov/cgi-bin/ampage?collId=llhb&fileName=038/llhb038.db&recNum=184 …Thanks. No. It’s not the only way. Instead we could dissolve the District and cede it back to Maryland. Problem solved.

Am pretty sure that is ruled to be unconstitutional to not grant all US citizens the right to vote. DC is home to full time permanent residential citizens and they should be allowed to vote.
-
DC residents vote. The person DC residents elect as House Delegate does not have voting authority in Congress.
-
Thanks for clarifying. But the argument remains the same.
