He then followed up w/ another question (which I asked the chair if it was ok to answer), + again sought me out after the Q&A to state his title and reaffirm his disbelief. The other panellists + audience members were wonderfully supportive + I feel I defended myself well

but I am still left feeling unsettled (hello 2:30am tweeting). So I ask you
#academictwitter : how do you deal with difficult questioners in a public and academic context?Näytä tämä ketju -
Thank you SO MUCH to everyone who has commented with support & advice, and I'm sorry it has resonated with so many. I feel so much better reading through these, and really uplifted at finding so many thoughtful, considerate people

Sorry you had to deal with this, but it sounds like you handled it really well (I can’t help but be tetchy in those sorts of situations). These reactions are only because the old guard feel threatened by new methods and thinkers (plus good old stale male privilege of course)

every time ive seen this done it was not because they genuinely wanted to engage with the young scholar but it was just a dick-measuring contest.

This is awful!! So sorry this happened. I have seen so many positive comments about your work, so please don’t let this make you forget that you are doing great work. Really hope that you are okay

What in the actual fuck? That's phenomenally rude. My way of deflecting older, unpleasant men is to tell them that my research has so far backed up my hypothesis, and that I find xyz engaging. If they continue kicking off, it just makes them look even more unprofessional.

You’d think a senior academic would have learned that “that’s annoying” and “I disagree” does not constitute a refutation, but

I would have said that we often feel ‘annoyed’ when an idea threatens our habits of thought. I’d suggest that his annoyance could be a learning opportunity and wish him the best of luck with it!
