As we wait for a verdict, let’s be clear: (1) a carceral system will never truly bring justice to our communities. (2) We must rebuild the whole damn thing to center human rights. (3) Real justice would mean George Floyd could be home tonight with his fiancee & his daughter.

Fav BHM read so far - "Heroes...are often made mythic in ways that are troubling. Social change is never wrought by individuals. Movement is a collective endeavor and the romantic ideal of the hero obscures that truth."
excellent read by -"A nation that once enslaved Black people and declared them legally three-fifths of a person now pays many of their descendants less than a third of the minimum wage to which everyone else is entitled." nytimes.com/2021/02/05/opi

Awesome reporting by on housing insecurity in Chicago during the pandemic. And my favorite kind of storytelling - letting the folks living the experience be the masters of the narrative.

While I'm overjoyed to have our Madame VP😍 we also have to recognize that we just lost our ONLY Black woman in the senate (and we've only had two). #undertheblacklight

Well this is a pretty good argument for DC Statehood. If DC were a state it would have a Governor. A Governor could activate the national guard. But DC is a protectorate of the federal government, essentially dependent on the folks complicit in this lil' coup. #DCStatehood

black chicagoans are dying from covid at 6x the rate of white chicagoans. we needed high quality demographic data in order to identify that disparity. the obvious next question - what are we gonna do about it? #MetroRecovery

We’re finding out the mayor has contracted for five hundred private security officers this weekend. A company called Monterrey Security. No names or badge numbers on their uniforms so accountability will be very difficult.

I spent three years working alongside police departments across the US on reform. As my former colleague soberly reminded us yesterday, it wasn't enough. We can't fix a system built on white supremacy. That's why I support #AbolitionNotReform

"But so many of these reforms simply don't work.
Why is that?
Because the criminal justice system was founded upon white supremacy and capitalism - and it continues to serve those dual gods regardless of how much we tweak it with reforms." #urbaninstitute

As Black lives continue to be violently taken by sanctioned state force - we need to think seriously about abolition vs reform and which will bring about true justice.
Here are some thoughts from my perspective as a former justice policy researcher. #abolitionnotreform (1/9)

"Abolition is an invitation to do something better. Abolition requires research, creatively, partnership, and principles. It’s not easy but it is only way to towards the flourishing of black people in this nation."

I researched policing professionally for 4 years and experientially for a couple decades. Here is a thread on why we need #abolitonnotreform now and institutions like @urbaninstitute need step away from reformist work and join the creative work of abolitionist visioning.

This thread. I can’t get this story out my head. I carried Naima’s stroller alone so many times. People treat moms and kids—especially, but not only, Black, Brown and/or poor ones—like an inconvenience in this city. New Yorkers stick together? I don’t see that for moms.

Heartbroken over the story of the mother who died holding her child’s stroller at the bottom of these subway steps last night. I am covering it today - and every parent I talk to agrees — it’s a terrifying part of raising babies in this city.

(5) BOTTOM LINE: Being outside AT ALL Wednesday/Thursday morning will be extremely challenging. Wind chills like this come along once in a generation. This cold could be life-threatening, and should not be taken lightly.
I hope this helps, and I hope everyone stays safe
